Robert "Doug"
Roland
Feb 24, 1941 — Aug 24, 2024
Robert Douglas Roland, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024, with his family at his side.
Born in Malvern, Arkansas on February 24, 1941, he was the first child of Anna McCray Roland and Robert Douglas Roland, Sr.
Doug was married to Rose Marie Dianne Kruger for 50 years and was the father of sons Bryan Kruger Roland and Brock McCray Roland. He was known for his kindness, generosity, love, and true devotion to his wife and his family. He set an example of what a man could truly be.
He will be remembered for his duck dinners provisioned by his hunting outings, his two favorite jokes that he told for decades, his tough love, and his southern accent and charm. Doug enjoyed cycling until he was 77 years old, and he hiked immeasurable miles in the California Sierra Nevada mountains and the Colorado Rockies.
After attending undergraduate school at Southern Methodist University, he earned his master's degree in mechanical engineering at MIT. In everything he did, one could see his engineering footprint, from his pioneering bicycle motion computer simulations to dominating the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby, prompting rule changes on wheel modifications and weight distribution.
He was an executive at Calspan, AMF, Masco, Barber & Ross custom window company, and vice president at Delta Faucet where he was proudly awarded with a patent for faucet design.
Doug delighted in do-it-yourself projects, golfing, camping, backpacking, fishing, and hiking. In all his passions, he brought enthusiasm to those who were interested and willing to take a risk, pursuing daring adventures that might be dangerous, even life-threatening.
Brother to the late Frank Roland (Regina Lile Roland) of Conway, AR, Doug is survived by his sister, Felice Roland Bond (Tom) from Williamsburg, VA, and his sons, Bryan (Shannon Vaffis) of Tucson, AZ, and Brock (Caroline Cannizzaro) from San Bruno, CA. He enjoyed being with his nieces and nephews and was blessed with three granddaughters, Sophia, Caroline, and Eleanor Roland.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, from 4-7 PM at Wendel and Loecher Funeral Home (Lancaster). A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 29, at St. John's Lutheran Church (Lancaster) with burial at Clarence Fillmore Cemetery (Clarence). Afterwards, lunch will be served at Ripa's Restaurant (Lancaster).
